2 Officers Killed, Suspect Dead in Barron County

NEAR CAMERON—Two police officers and a suspect are dead after an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop Saturday afternoon in Barron County.

Authorities have confirmed that around 3:40 p.m., a Chetek officer conducted a traffic stop on a suspect, with an officer from Cameron assisting.

During the stop, gunfire was "exchanged" with the suspect. Both police officers were pronounced dead at the scene, and the suspect died after being transported to a local hospital.

The officers have been identified as Hunter Scheel, of the Cameron Police Department, and Emily Breidenbach, with the Chetek Police Department.

The suspect has been identified as Glenn Douglas Perry, 50.

A procession Monday morning brought the bodies of the slain officers from Barron County to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Officer in Ramsey, Minn., met by dozens of mourners, police and emergency vehicles. The procession was set to return to Barron County between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m Monday.

Officer Breidenbach, age 32, started her law enforcement career with Stoughton Police Department in Dane County. She served there for about 9 months before she joined Chetek Police Department, where she had served for approximately 4 years.

Officer Scheel, age 23, graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy in December of 2022. He had been with Cameron Police Department for approximately one year.

Investigation of the incident is ongoing by DCI, assisted by the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin State Patrol and Wisconsin State Crime Lab.
