2 Suspects Shot by Milwaukee Police Friday Night

MILWAUKEE—Milwaukee police officers shot and injured two suspects while responding to reports of large crowds in the 1200 block of S. Cesar Chávez Dr. late Friday night.

Police say while officers were trying to disperse the large crowd around 11 p.m., "several individuals" began firing shots in the area.

One officer encountered a male suspect who was allegedly firing rounds on the 1200 block of S. 15th Pl. and gave the suspect several commands to drop the gun. The officer then shot the suspect, a 22-year-old Greenfield man, who was transported to the hospital with non-fatal injuries. His handgun was recovered, authorities said, and the officer was not hurt.

Around the same time, another officer encountered a separate armed suspect who was firing shots on the 1200 block of S. Cesar Chávez Dr. The officer gave the 17-year-old male suspect several commands to stop and eventually shot several times, hitting the suspect at least once. The suspect, from Milwaukee, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and is currently in stable condition. A handgun was later recovered at the scene, police said.

Both officers have been placed on standard administrative leave following the incidents Friday night.

“Firing celebratory gunfire for any event is unacceptable. When these incidents occurred, several firearms were discharged in the vicinity including fully automatic firearms. We are thankful that no other individuals including our officers were injured by gunfire,” a media release from the Milwaukee Police Department said.
